VISA TOWARDS A VISTA OF VISION

During every waking moment the bliss of sight engulfs us in esteem
Enthused, real glib or damn unworthy, aren’t we indeed so privileged,
Feast of visual treat we savour, yet unaware of the ocular paradigm
This verse reels rays of the physical phenomena that we get thrilled.

Cornea, the first corridor to vision, the six layered structure upfront,
Convex in shape, so complex in physical nature, indeed transparent,
Dioptrically refracts light serenely, sharing three fourth of eye power,
Sans blood, richly innervated, compact in stromal lamella so patent,

Eyes wide open throughout the sixteen waking hours of transmission,
Conducting the good, the bad and the ugly viewing, day in and out,
The Six layered compact cornea provides the corridor to your vision
The surface, so rich in non-myelinated nerves forming initial sprout

Bowman’s layer, frowning in injury with a retaliative scar so eternal,
Stroma forms the main bulk, rich in glycosaminoglycans so compact.
The elastic Descemet forms the tough barrier, features so minimal,
The vital endothelium in the rear is born with no rebirth seal intact,

These cells of this precious endothelium, much respected in power
Yet losing the cells are replaced by sliding of the neighbouring cell
They keep the marauding aqueous at bay, keeping the cornea clear
Commands respect from every ocular surgeon treating it as special

Often I wonder how the cornea keeps itself clear, raring for a sight
No grumble, no frown, after hours of thankless toil till the final day.
Yet sans life after death, the cornea continues to lead kindly light,
The cornea, the best suited for a transplantation sighting the way,

For a few cases of corneal blindness it’s indeed a light in the tunnel
Keratoplasty, for those living in darker side of life is a boon on time
Proving thereby that we still can serve mankind after our funeral,
When one can help in need even in death, a wasted life will sublime.
